ROAR Columbus meets with Arshot
ROAR MEETS WITH ARSHOT INVESTMENT CORPORATION TO DISCUSS THE COOPER STADIUM REDEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL.
(Columbus) On Thursday, July 31, 2008, the steering committee for ROAR (Redevelop Our Area Responsibly) met with representatives of the Arshot Investment Corporation and developer Bill Schottenstein to express their concerns about converting Cooper Stadium into a high-speed motorsports complex.
ROAR believes building a motorsports complex in such a high-density residential area as Franklinton will severely impact the quality of life, property values and environment for local residents as well as those in and around downtown Columbus. This area includes German Village, Merion Village, the Brewery District, the Whittier Peninsula redevelopment and downtown as far north as the Condominiums at North Bank Park.
Arshot said their plans for the proposed motorsports complex are still in the preliminary stages. As a result, they are not yet in a position to discuss specifics on the project. However, they made it clear that they are committed to moving forward with the proposal.
ROAR pointed out that, based on their initial research, the extreme engine noise from the race cars will be heard up to three miles away. Arshot disagreed, saying they believe the noise level will be negligible. However, they said they plan to commission a noise impact study before proceeding. Arshot said they'll appoint an independent search committee to recommend an appropriate firm.
Arshot also said they are hiring a public relations firm to help build local support for the project.
As a result of the meeting, ROAR is continuing its organizational efforts and is preparing a campaign to oppose the conversion of Cooper Stadium into a high-speed motorsports complex.
